Retinoid

Retinol (OTC)

What it is

An over-the-counter retinoid (vitamin A derivative) converted in the skin to active retinoic acid.

What it does

Supports cell turnover and collagen over time; improves the look of texture, tone, and fine lines with consistent use.

Where it appears

Serums and creams, often 0.1–1%; used nightly, introduced gradually.

Who may benefit

Clients targeting aging, tone, or texture with tolerant skin.

Considerations

Can cause dryness, peeling, and sensitivity at first. Avoid pregnancy/breastfeeding. Do not combine with strong acids in the same step. Sun sensitivity increases.

Common misconceptions

It is not the same as prescription tretinoin (stronger). Initial flaking is adjustment, not an allergy.

Interactions

Separate from AHAs/BHAs, vitamin C (if irritation), and benzoyl peroxide (can inactivate).

How Willow talks about it

Frame as 'slow and steady' — start 2–3 nights, build up, always with SPF and a supportive barrier routine.
